Tapiola's neighbouring area Otaniemi is a centre of technology.
The greater part of the highest education and research in technology in Finland is located in this area, which was designed by Academician Alvar Aalto.
In addition to Aalto, architects that have enriched Otaniemi's redbrick facade include Kaija and Heikki Siren, Reima and Raili Pietilä, Timo Penttilä, Aulis Blomstedt and Markus Toivio.
Over the years, one of the most significant concentrations of technology in Finland has emerged around Aalto University´s Otaniemi Campus area (former School of Science and Technology, TKK). where Conference Centre Dipoli is also located. Among others, the Technical Research Centre of Finland VTT, the pulp and paper research laboratory KCL, the Geological Survey of Finland GTK, CSC - Scientific Computing and the Innopoli business generator, which transforms new ideas and research results into business, operate in close interaction with Aalto Universty´s research and education.
Tapiola and its surroundings have quickly developed into northern Europe's leading centre of technology. Approximately three out of every four industrial jobs in Espoo are in high-tech fields. Almost 500 international companies have operations in the city.
