Accessibility in the visitespoo.fi online service

COMPLIANCE WITH REQUIREMENTS

We are committed to improve the digital accessibility and user experience for users with disabilities at visitespoo.fi.

This accessibility statement was created on 30 March 2020. The statement reports how well visitespoo.fi meets the accessibility requirements defined in the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). These guidelines were created to help website and digital service designers and developers make digital user interfaces more accessible to users with disabilities

The latest accessibility review revealed that visitespoo.fi complies with the requirements partially and meets some of the AA level criteria of the WCAG 2.1 guidelines. Crasman Oy is currently conducting external audits and we are constantly updating this page on the basis of these audits.

Partial compliance with the requirements means that some features on the site, such as colour contrasts, do not completely meet the accessibility requirements or fully support the use of assistive technology, such as screen readers. User feedback on the accessibility of the website is very important to us.

We want our website and service to be accessible to everyone, which is why we are constantly reviewing and developing the website.

The accessibility of this digital service was reviewed by Crasman Oy.

INACCESSIBLE CONTENT

The pieces of content listed below are not accessible according to the Act on the Provision of Digital Services 306/2019.

The following pieces of content and functionalities do not yet meet the WCAG requirements:

The majority of the images do not contain alternative text content or the images have not been labelled as decoration.

Most of the images do not contain alternative text content in the context of the image or alt attribute. In addition, images of pure decoration have not been labelled with an empty alt attribute. This defect concerns the whole service.

Accessibility requirements that are not met

Inaccessible buttons and links

Inaccessible content and its defects

Several search functions of the service have a search button that is text-free and only contains a search icon. Social media icons that function as links used in the service do not have text alternatives. The VisitEspoo logo on the navigation bar and footnote links to the front page but does not have a text alternative. Most of the links and buttons do not meet the contrast requirement and users are forced to identify the links based on colour.

Accessibility requirements that are not met

Content grouping is not completely programmatically determinable

Inaccessible content and its defects The social media icons are connected but not grouped. The website feature links are connected but not grouped. The footnote links have not been grouped as part of the navigation.

Accessibility requirements that are not met

Not all content is always made available to screen readers

Inaccessible content and its defects When selecting a service, the service type text content is not made available to screen readers. In addition, some filter options are not made available or the options are listed in wrong order. When browsing search results, the most relevant part of a link is not read first. There are sections on the Contact Information page that are visible to no one and are thus made available to screen readers in vain. Some pages make otherwise hidden elements available to screen readers. A service selection example page: https://www.visitespoo.fi/fi/kohteet-ja-palvelut/syo-ja-juhli/juhlatilat/

Accessibility requirements that are not met

Programmatic defects of service content

Inaccessible content and its defects The search function role attribute is in the wrong element and the search field label does not refer to the search element. The main elements of the website, such as navigation, main content and footnote, are listed incorrectly for assistive technologies like screen readers. Several pages use the programmatic main attribute wrong and several times. Several pages also contain an additional heading element within the main element. The email addresses and telephone numbers on the site do not function as links. Some heading rows and column cells of tables have been described wrong semantically. The relationships between cells and most heading rows are missing.

Accessibility requirements that are not met

Individual pages contain semantically incorrect headings

Inaccessible content and its defects Some pages contain paragraphs that have been visually highlighted by labelling them programmatically as headings. Individual pages contain groups of content with subheadings missing or the page headings are not descriptive. Individual pages contain headings within body text elements.

Accessibility requirements that are not met

Functionalities based on sensory characteristics

Inaccessible content and its defects Box-type feature and link elements are clickable links, but they do not look like links and their function as links is not indicated in any way. On an individual service page, the service’s location on map is indicated with a black sign without any text or other assistance. The mandatory fields of all forms are indicated simply with a red asterisk. The search fields and image sliders use only icons for searching and browsing. In the boat timetables, the departure and arrival times of boats are only indicated with arrows pointing up and down. On the privacy policy pages, the accordions have been only determined with colour.

Accessibility requirements that are not met

The purpose of form field input data is missing

Inaccessible content and its defects No automatic data completion is provided in fields related to user information.

Accessibility requirements that are not met

Text spacing according to required standard values breaks functions

Inaccessible content and its defects When test values are used, the navigation function becomes broken. The box-type feature elements used in the service are readable but look broken when test values are used.

Accessibility requirements that are not met

Several pieces of content do not meet the contrast requirement

Inaccessible content and its defects The buttons with a white icon and text on green background do not meet the contrast requirement. On several pages, there is text on top of the main image and the contrast requirement is not necessarily met. The general link colour and navigation links of the service do not meet the contrast requirement. The form labels do not meet the contrast requirement. The box-type feature elements have text on top of images and some of them do not meet the contrast requirement.

Accessibility requirements that are not met

Font size cannot be resized up to 200%

Inaccessible content and its defects Text cannot be enlarged on mobile devices. On desktops and tablet devices, resizing text to 200% actually causes the font to be downsized on most pages. This is a result of the font size being partially determined by how much space it takes. When there is no longer enough space, the font size is downsized. On individual pages, text is cut from the middle when the font size is enlarged.

Accessibility requirements that are not met

Other defects

Inaccessible content and its defects Individual pages contain image elements that cannot be enlarged. This basically forces the service to be used horizontally on mobile devices. The navigation item City Info opens the menu too far away from the cursor when the cursor is placed on top of the link.

Accessibility requirements that are not met

Operable

Defects in keyboard browsing focusing Inaccessible content and its defects The navigation items with drop-down menus cannot be opened using a keyboard. On the front page and corresponding search pages, the keyboard focuses first on the search field, then on the navigation bar and only after that on the search button. Furthermore, the focus is not visible to the user. Individual pages contain elements that are not visible but on which the keyboard nevertheless attempts to focus. In addition, because most email addresses and telephone numbers on the website are not links, selecting them using a keyboard is difficult. On mobile devices, the navigation access button and language option become available for the keyboard in a different order than is visually presented. Keyboard focus is not visible in the following situations: image slider browsing buttons, navigation access button on mobile devices, drop-down menu selection, map functions, form multiple choice boxes.

Accessibility requirements that are not met

Automatic search bar search suggestions cannot be hidden

Inaccessible content and its defects Focusing on automatic search bar search suggestions is not possible when using a keyboard. The suggestion list remains open even when the user moves away from the search bar.

Accessibility requirements that are not met

The service does not allow users to bypass the navigation

Inaccessible content and its defects The navigation cannot be bypassed with keyboard.

Accessibility requirements that are not met

Links with unclear purpose

Inaccessible content and its defects Individual pages contain links that only say “here” or provide the link URL. Individual pages contain links that use the same text. The navigation items “Best in Espoo” and “Sights and Services” and “City Info” are similar and their purpose cannot be necessarily identified from the headings. The “Visit Espoo” heading on the footnote is not a descriptive heading for the links beside it.

Accessibility requirements that are not met

The service has only one way to locate an individual page among all pages

Inaccessible content and its defects In addition to navigation, locating an individual page is possible, for example, by using the search function on the front page. However, the search function is only available on the front page.

Accessibility requirements that are not met

Understandable

Changes of context in service filtering Inaccessible content and its defects On all pages that allow the user to filter provided services, the context changes when filter options are selected. This change occurs far away from the button and no instructions are provided regarding this. In addition, the search results change depending on whether the user accesses the results via a direct URL address or if they change the filter options before searching.

Accessibility requirements that are not met

Navigation item “Events” takes the user to a completely different website

Inaccessible content and its defects The navigation item “Events” takes the user to a completely different website, which is not indicated in any way beforehand.

Accessibility requirements that are not met

Search field and form instruction defects

Inaccessible content and its defects The user is instructed to “Fill in the mandatory fields” but these fields are only indicated mandatory with faint red colour. Several fields lack a label and none of the fields have instructions or examples attached to them. In addition, individual forms accept incorrect values, for example, telephone numbers for email addresses.

Accessibility requirements that are not met

Robust

Defects in the service’s programmatic structure Inaccessible content and its defects In service filtering, the search filter buttons have been labelled as links. Search results have been labelled within a form element, even though there is no form functionality. On individual pages, there are heading elements within body text, tables whose structure does not correspond with the HTML5 form, and forbidden elements (style) in main content (body). Form error messages or status changes are not made available to screen readers. Individual forms do not have a defined function. When using search functions, search results are not made available to screen readers.
